I’m love to research about new technology appear in the world. I’m like wordpress but also love Joomla and another cms. To day i want to write about Drupal, one of the best custom opensource in the world.

Drupal also a very famous CMS opensource in the world, few years ago i’m just thinking about Joomla cause its the most  well know cms in that time. But after drupal appear, i have to start think again. Drupal was released not only with all of the functions of joomla, but also adding more special things that joomla never have.

Unfortunately, Drupal basic source code did not support SEO but just like joomla there are a lot of add on that webmaster can use to improving their search engine friendly. In this post, i will introduce one drupal add on that call ” Nodewords”, it will handle the most important factor of SEO in drupal website which is Meta tag.

Installing Nodewords to Your Drupal Site

Step 1: Visit http://drupal.org/project/nodewords to download the latest version of “Nodewords”.
Step 2: Extract the files into a folders on your desktop. The folder will be called “nodewords”.
Step 3: Login to your site’s files via FTP and navigate to /sites/all/. If there isn’t a folder called /modules/ here, create one.
Step 4: Upload the “nodewords” folder to /sites/all/modules/
Step 5: Go to Administer >> Site building >> Modules. You’ll need to check only the first two of the four boxes if you’d like to add regular metadata:

Step 6: Go and create a new node. When you do, you should notice a new area labelled “Meta tags” and you’ll be able to add metadata to all your nodes:

Step 7: You can also give the search engines information about how this page should be crawled, by using the “Robots” checkboxes. These are the messages you can send to Google or Yahoo:

Configuration Nodewords add on

The default Nodewords settings might not be to everyone’s taste. There is no short cut to the Nodewords editing page, unless you to to Administer >> By Module >> Nodewords >> Meta tags. There you can choose global settings for your site’s metatdata.

Everybody may already know about Joomla, one of the most well know CMS open source in the world. Joomla is totally different with Wordpress, cause wordpress is perfect for blogging and Joomla is the real CMS (content manager systems). In joomla you can custom anythings that you want, even the CMS, Portal and also a blog.

Unfortunately, the basic source of joomla 1.5x (the laster version) does not support SEO so much. They just have some features for SEO, but it can’t help much for webmaster to improve their keyword ranking in search engine. However, there are a lot of extensions can made your Joomla website more and more perfect for SEO and the first component which all of joomla webmaster in the world will thinking of is Sh404sef.

In this post, I will show you the best way to using sh404sef for joomla 1.5x.

I. Sh404sef features:

sh404SEF rewrites Joomla URL to a more user-friendly format (SEF URL or URL rewriting): mysite.com/index.php?option=com_content&Itemid=69&id=34… becomes mysite.com/en/sh404SEF-and-url-rewriting/list-of-available-plugins.html).
It is also a security component and manages title and meta tags : automatic tags, or manual for every page. It works with or without .htaccess file. Joomfish compatible. Caching system for high speed and very small DB queries overhead.
Support many components natively but uses also sef_ext from OpenSEF/SEF Advanced. VirtueMart, Fireboard, Community Builder, mosetsTree, HotProperty, Sobi2, Docman, myBlog, iJoomla Magazine,News Portal, Remository and more supported natively. SSL switch, automatic 301 redirection from non-sef to sef and from Joomla SEF to sh404SEF, insert Google news style numerical ID,.. Many backend parameters to control URL construction behavior.

II. How to use sh404sef for joomla 1.5x

1. Download the laster version for sh404sef here:

Right now it cost: 35$ for lift time license & 1 year update. But in the last 6 months, it was un-commercial extension and everyone can use it for free.

I still have the laster free version of sh404sef, its can be less perfect than commercial version, but i thinks its okay. If everyone want to have this version contact me via max[at]saigonseo.com.

2. Install:

This part is very easy, just install like the way you install any component.

3. Configuration:

- Go Admin >> Component >> sh404sef

- On the main page, change admin page to extended display.

- Enable the component in Main tab.

- Character Replacement list: You just care about this function, if your website using multiple language or your main language have some special character. If your language have some special character, you have to config the replace for each word.

You can follow my example to re-config your language. It will be the character you using in your rewrite url, so that be careful in this part.

- File suffix: if you want your url look like an html file you can type “html” in this section, or if you want you url look like wordpress url style you can type “/”

- In Advance Tab: You should enable URL Cache for improving the load speed of website.

-  Rewritter mode : is also very important, it depend on your server. If your server using windows OS, you have to choice option without.htaccess(?index.php) (with this option your url will adding ?index.php after domain name).

Or if you using Linux server with apache support you can choice option with.htaccess(mod_rewrite), it can bring you a perfect url.

- Done with save

Some notes when using sh404sef:

1. You should turn off the SEO function of Joomla, before using sh404sef.

2. If you have problem with .htaccess, you should copy the demo code of .htaccess in document of sh404sef (you can found it in admin cpanel)

3. When you want to reinstall sh404sef with default setting, you have to delete all the table of sh404sef in your sql

4. If you want to using another component with sh404sef, you should double check about the plugin of this component to work with sh404sef.

5. After enable sh404sef, the first page you should go is your sitemap.

In this post i will use the case study of  Mani Karthik, one of the most famous webmaster with DailySEOBlog.com. In this case he was change the domain from Dailyseoblog.com to dailybloggr.com, let see what he was done.

You may already know DailySEOBlog and DailySEOblog used to enjoy a traffic of roughly 50,000 visits & 73,000 page views per month on an average.

Most of the traffic was search engine referrals (~65%), with Google.com topping the most referred channel followed by Stumbleupon.com, RSS feeds and Twitter.  I love this traffic source.

Two weeks ago (Feb 14th, 2010), the domain change was live with a 301 redirect on the old one redirecting all the old URLs to dailybloggr.com. And here are the stats since then.

Its too early for a comparison but Google still remains the topper in referrals with RSS feeds, Twitter, Tweetmeme and Facebook being the biggest channels.

Alexa too is looking good with a bounce back from the domain change days.

You can clearly see the “transition” around Feb mid when the domain change occurred.

So how did the domain name change and transition happen overnight ?

Well, actually it didn’t happen overnight. Like some of you had noticed (and asked me on Twitter), the 301 redirect had been implemented some 5-7 days prior to the site revamp.

Step 1 – Diverting all the Google traffic via a 301 redirect

I used a htaccess, mod rewrite rule to 301 redirect all the traffic as below.

- All www.dailyseoblog.com } www.dailybloggr.com

- All http://dailyseoblog.com } www.dailybloggr.com

- All http://www.dailyseoblog.com } www.dailybloggr.com

As you might already know, a 301 redirect is the best way to tell search engines that your site has moved permanently. This might not get done immediately, but the idea is to wait and get all the referrals get stuck with a 301 board and once most of this is done, you’re somewhere close to the transition.

( Things to remember while doing a 301 redirect )

- Make sure you pick a static version of the new site (in my case the www version) and create rules so as to move all the other versions of the old domain (wwww, non www and all other versions) to the static version. This is important or things can get worse later on creating one or more versions of the website.

- Make sure you register the new site on Google Webmasters tool and select the static version of the site as your “preferred domain”. Do NOT leave this option unattended.

- Test the 301 from various IPs, if possible from regions. Get some social media help here, if you have friends elsewhere.

Step 2 – Getting the SERPs right, changing all the old listings to the new domain

You won’t have direct control over this, well neither does Google. So all you got to do is do the steps necessary to help the bots do a neat job.

- Submit a new sitemap, via Webmasters central.

- Get some links via good authority web pages, if you can.

- Wait patiently.

It took me around a week to completely get all the old serps to feature the new site name, and even now the transition isn’t complete. You’ll find the dailyseoblog.com stamp on many SERPs listings, but most of this is done, so I assume the rest is under process. Nothing to worry. Also, this is only a minor issue if you care much about the brand. Because anyways if you have the 301s in place, all the search traffic will be properly redirected.

Step 3 – Getting the ball rolling

This is just an additional step you do just to make sure that everything falls in to place. And not all SEOs would be keen on this but I am. What you do is, create some social media friendly content, and “promote” it on the social media channels. Technically it means nothing to an SEO, but this is sort of a “nailing it down” process. I didn’t have much problem here, but sites that have low traffic and lesser google visit frequency might have a problem in speeding up things and getting the major chunk of URLs redirected right. You can leverage on social media here. What you do is get as many traffic as possible from various social media channels, get your content out there, and get as many “human” clicks in. As I’ve mentioned in one of my older posts, search engines these days take into consideration some amount of “social presence” as a factor in deciding the authority of a website. If not everything, they mean something. I mean, if Google doesn’t know about a website but lots of people around the world are flocking around it, wouldn’t Google jump in and get the site indexed ? It should in my opinion. So this step is all about that. You do it, if you can. No obligations.

Step 4 – Getting your settings & tentacles right

By tentacles I mean all the other things you have for your sites presence. RSS feeds, AdSense ads, Bookmarking Options, Custom search result pages, Email subscription options, Email addresses, Twitter feeds etc.

By now, Dailyseoblog has almost all of its SERPs listings moved to the new domain, and the rest of them are on the way. Backlinks to the old domain have been successfully traced back to the new domain. Things are looking good except with some glitches like being unable to change the facebook fan group name, but you got to live with it I guess.

This is not a brand new feature but it would be a new one to many bloggers as they have never been notified of such updates. Google have been notifying webmasters of suspected hacking for years, but a recent upgrade to its systems will allow them to notify many more site owners that have been hacked.

I have jut login my account but not seeing any notice like this. That is great as my site is now in safe stand. However, having a look at your webmaster tool account on regular basis will give you a good view on how safe your site will be and have timely action on any issues notified by Google. You can also set the feature that send the notification alert to your mailbox.

WP-Print will load ‘print-css.css‘, ‘print-posts.php‘ and ‘print-comments.php‘ from your theme’s directory if it exists.
If it doesn’t exists, it will just load the respective defalult file that comes with WP-Print.
This will allow you to upgrade WP-Print without worrying about overwriting your printing styles or templates that you have created.
